E-flite Apprentice STS 1.5m

The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the freshly mown field. It was almost perfect, save for the occasional gust that seemed determined to snag my carefully plotted approach. My student, bless his heart, was holding the transmitter like a fragile newborn. I figured this was a baptism by fire of sorts. The E-flite Apprentice STS 1.5m sat patiently, its familiar lines promising flight.
First impressions, the packaging is certainly inviting. Assembly? A breeze. Anyone who’s wrestled with a complex kit can appreciate the pre-built components and the straightforward manual. This airplane isn’t about sweating the small stuff; it’s about learning. The included SAFE technology, with its Beginner, Intermediate, and Experienced modes, is the true star. Seriously, it’s like having a virtual co-pilot. Want a gentle introduction to flight? Beginner mode keeps everything level and limits control surface movement. Ready for a bit of stick-and-rudder fun? Bump it up a notch.
The plane itself is a sensible size. Not so small it gets lost in the breeze, not so large it feels like you’re wrestling a pterodactyl. The 1.5-meter wingspan strikes a nice balance. It’s surprisingly robust too. We’ve all had those “ground contact” moments. Thankfully, the Apprentice STS can take a beating. The Z-foam is more resilient than you might initially think. Now, I understand there is a different version, the older version without SAFE, but the inclusion of this technology makes all the difference when teaching new pilots.
The pre-installed motor and servos are perfectly adequate. Don’t expect blistering speed. This isn’t a racing machine. It’s about graceful, predictable flight. Power is sufficient for basic aerobatics once you’re comfortable. Speaking of which, the ability to do loops, rolls, and fly inverted is a significant draw. It’s what keeps you, and the learner, engaged. A minor quibble: The stock propeller, while functional, is a bit… floppy. A stiffer, higher-quality prop would improve performance, especially in wind. However, at this price point, it’s a perfectly acceptable compromise. I’d suggest grabbing a few spares or exploring some upgrades down the line.
Our first flight? A wobbly, slightly stressful affair. But that’s par for the course. After a few nervous moments in Beginner mode, my student began to relax. He transitioned to Intermediate mode and slowly gained confidence. By the time the sun dipped below the horizon, he was almost landing the thing. That’s a win in my book.
For the aspiring pilot, or anyone looking for a reliable trainer, the E-flite Apprentice STS 1.5m is an excellent choice. Don’t waste time on overly complex starter kits. Just purchase a compatible LiPo battery and a charger, then get out there and fly. And don’t forget the sunscreen.
