Plastic Army Men - Green Soldiers

Plastic Army Men - Green Soldiers

The afternoon sun, a merciless spotlight, glinted off the sweat beading on Sergeant Miller’s brow. We’d been bivouacked in the sandbox for close to an hour, our meticulously planned ambush against the tan forces stalled by a rather egregious logistical oversight. Turns out, not every green plastic soldier is created equal.

This particular 36-piece set of U.S. Toy Army Men, the kind you can pick up for the price of a lukewarm coffee, promised a classic experience. And in many ways, it delivered. The poses – prone firing, standing guard, radio operator – are instantly recognizable, a nostalgic echo of countless childhood skirmishes. The injection molding seems to be above average, providing crisp detail that you’d expect to see in the standard 1:35 scale for these types of models. That’s a huge win, folks, because sometimes, you get figures with more flash than a Las Vegas show.

The plastic itself feels appropriately robust, though not quite at the level of some of the pricier, specialized sets you’d find for serious diorama builders. (We’re talking those guys.) Still, for the intended purpose—rough-and-tumble play—they should hold up to a decent amount of abuse. My initial concern was the bases, as some of these cheaper models have a tendency to topple over easily. These guys surprisingly remained planted, even when subjected to the brutal winds of a child’s breath.

The biggest issue I encountered, and it’s a common one in this price range, is the mold lines. They’re visible, especially on the helmets and rifles. Now, this isn’t a dealbreaker. Anyone who’s ever assembled a miniature knows that a quick swipe with a hobby knife or a few passes with some fine-grit sandpaper will smooth those right out. You might even consider painting them, as a bit of weathering on these fellows could transform a simple toy into something truly special. Besides, who wants perfect soldiers anyway? War’s messy!

While not quite as detailed or pose-able as, say, a set from Tamiya (a Japanese manufacturer), these U.S. Toy soldiers are a solid starting point, providing hours of imaginative play. For a parent looking for a durable and affordable gift, these are a fantastic option. Just make sure to include some sandbags in the shopping cart. You’ll need them.
